Arthurian Legend for Middle Grade Readers

Arthurian Legend Author Cheryl Carpinello

I am first and foremost a teacher.  Nothing invigorates me more than guiding young minds in exploring themselves and the world around them. Introducing young people to the literature of the ages and the importance of the written word (even their own!)is a thrill that has never subsided.  And so today, I write for young readers (grades 3-6) and hope to capture their imaginations as they learn to love literature.  I can think of no better vehicle to do this with than the eternal legend of King Arthur.

My first book Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend introduces young readers to Guinevere the girl as she struggles with growing up and fulfilling her destiny.

My second book Young Knights of the Round Table: The Kings' Ransom brings to readers the cornerstones of Arthurian Legend: Honor, Loyality, and Friendship all packed into an exciting adventure.

"...Carpinello manages to create a unique and original version of Guinevere’s childhood.  Carpinello is obviously enthusiastic about sharing the Arthurian legend with young readers. Her biography states that “The focus in her writing is on reluctant readers.” I felt she provided enough magic and detail to appeal to readers of all ages, especially in her realistic portrait of Guinevere coming of age. I also appreciated her short, educational section at the book’s end, including a discussion of the King Arthur Legend, a glossary, discussion questions, and some additional reading. The book is suitable for readers, depending on their reluctance or proclivity to read, from about third grade through middle school, although as an adult, I enjoyed the book thoroughly. “Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend” is a novel sure to win readers’ hearts and add to the many fans of the King Arthur legend."

Arthurian Legend for Middle Graders

Inspiration for Reading and Writing

I regularly conduct writing workshops for elementary students.  We discuss the writing process I used to write Guinevere.  Students then outline their own middle story with my guidance.

I also conduct 4 hour writing workshops for Colorado Girls Scouts.  We spend the time exploring the middle ages, writing poetry, learning runes, playing medieval games, and outlining their own medieval story.
